BCRRHRN Funding Opportunities

As part of our commitment to building rural and remote health research capacity in BC, the BCRRHRN offers a range of grants and awards to support students, new investigators, and experienced rural and remote health researchers. Click to view previous award recipients.


Call for Research Workshops

As part of the BCRRHRN Mentorship Program up to $2500 is available to researchers interested in hosting a research workshop that is tailored to conducting rural and/or remote health research in BC. Workshop format can range from a one hour lunch session to a half or full day intensive.

Possible topics include grant writing, ethics, qualitative and/or quantitative methods and community-based research in rural and/or remote health research.

The workshop host will lead the organization of the workshop logistics (e.g., workshop content, securing workshop facilitator, suggesting venue, local promotion) and is responsible for attending and hosting the workshop. BCRRHRN will cover the event costs and provide support for venue arrangements, promotion, registration, evaluation, follow-up, etc.

Working Group Initiative Funding

Funds up to $2,000 are available to support activities (e.g., writing research proposals, grants, developing a research agenda, analyzing research results, etc.) aimed at producing excellent rural health research.

Collaborative Team Building Award

The purpose of this award is to provide an opportunity for researchers to apply for up to $6,000 in funding to support support the development of new multidisciplinary research teams focused on an issue of current importance to rural and remote health and whose main goal is to apply for research funding.

Funds can be used for activities, resources and expenses related to building research teams and identifying research themes and questions. Eligible expenses include, but are not limited to, activities involved with recruiting team members; travel to, and facilitation of group meetings (face-to-face, videoconference, teleconference, WebEx); conducting a preliminary literature review; resources required to apply for a grant; team building exercises; etc.

Research Training Support Award

The BCRRHRN offers Research Training Support Awards of up to $1,500 to graduate students and/or junior researchers (academic, clinical, community) who are actively engaged in rural and remote health research. The purpose of these awards is to provide support for research training courses and workshops to increase their skills for research methodologies, peer-reviewed grant funding competitions and manuscripts.

This award is not intended to support tuition for academic programs.

Conference Travel Bursary

The BCRRHRN is offering Travel Bursaries to BC-based graduate students and researchers who are actively engaged in rural and remote health research, and who will be presenting their rural and remote research at a conference.

The BCRRHRN funding offers funding up to:
$750 for conference in Western Canada (BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba)
$1,000 for conferences in Eastern Canada (east of Manitoba) or in the USA
$1,500 for conferences outside of Canada or the USA, and in the Northwest Territories, Yukon or Nunavut.
